Celebrate American culture by sharing your time and knowledge and inspire people of all ages while exploring, discovering and learning together. Volunteer and help Heritage continue to grow by taking root in your community and become involved at Heritage Museums & Gardens.
Contribute in a variety of ways including providing administrative support, tending to the gardens, event management and interacting with visitors. So whether you like to be in the great outdoors, sitting behind a computer or interacting with people, we have a slot for you. Some of the Volunteer opportunities offered are:
Visitor Experience Volunteers:
Become an essential element of the museum’s front line by creating a friendly and comfortable environment for visitors to experience our gardens and galleries. As a Visitor Experience Volunteer, you will warmly welcome visitors as they arrive, distribute visitor guides, help with way finding, and recommend things to see and do within the grounds and galleries. We are seeking individuals that enjoy working with the public, have a positive attitude, excellent customer service and that are eager to make a visitors experience at Heritage one to remember.
Education Volunteers:
Playing is fun for all ages and as an Education Volunteer you will help families with hands-on activities and games and help them interpret, explore and learn all while having fun! Volunteers are also needed behind the scenes to help prepare materials for educational programs and help assist during events. Education Volunteers are also needed to help engage children and families in Hidden Hollow or our Family Discover Room.
Docents:
Interpret Heritage’s collections for school, community and adult groups by leading interactive, hands-on tours through our galleries and grounds. This position is available from March through the summer months with most tours April through June.
Mary Fay Jones Collections in Hand Instructor:
Help the Education Department bring collection-based lessons and objects into area classrooms and provide students with an interactive, hands-on learning experience. This program follows the school year from September through June with the most lessons taking place from March through May to grade levels pre-K through 5th.
Event & Program Volunteers:
The best days at Heritage are the busy ones filled with smiling faces! If you enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, this is the right position for you! This is an as-needed job for special functions such as openings, concerts, meetings, galas and lectures. Duties may include greeting guests, leading hands-on crafts and activities, exhibition and event attendants, Circus-Smirkus including program distribution, ushers, and ticket takers, set-up, and clean-up. No special skills required.
Administrative Volunteers:
Experience the inner workings of a nonprofit organization in this extremely important job that can assist a variety of departments, from Development, Marketing, Membership, Education to Visitor Services and Finance. Duties include but are not limited to: bulk mailings, filing, stuffing envelopes, telephone calls, updating web content, archiving promotional materials, membership outreach, etc.
Horticulture Volunteers:
Take time to smell the flowers! Work directly with the Director of Horticulture in the garden doing various duties from weeding, mulching, fertilizing, pruning and propagation to plant documentation. As a horticulture volunteer you will help heritage maintain Heritage’s beautiful public gardens enjoyed by all who visit.
Exhibit & Research Volunteers:
Work behind the scenes with our Director of Exhibits and Collections and our Exhibits Manager. With this position volunteers can help with exhibit planning, interpretation, installation, deinstallation and collection maintenance. Volunteers will also be involved in investigating and researching objects and collections, and photographing and entering data into our collections database.
Volunteers are needed during the normal Monday-Friday work week as well as weekends. Additional hours may be required during events. Volunteers should understand that they will be outside and should come ready to work in all weather conditions.
