Celebrate American culture and help Heritage Museums & Gardens grow by taking root in your community and becoming involved. Share your time and knowledge to inspire people of all ages while exploring, discovering and learning together! There are many opportunities to get involved, so find the one that’s right for you:
Visitor Experience Volunteer (VEV):
Join the Visitor Experience department to enrich the experience of our visitors! As a Visitor Experience Volunteer (VEV), you will work with the visitor services team to help provide a memorable, meaningful experience to our visitors. Daily assistance is needed in greeting visitors as they arrive, helping with way finding, and recommending things to see and do around the gardens and galleries. Another key role is event assistance; positions in this role include: ticket-taking, way finding, helping with craft and program activities, and assisting with crowd control. This position is available throughout the season and requires a minimum commitment of 4 hours weekly.
Engage K-8 grade students in hands-on interactive workshops that connect museum collections and STEM learning in fun and exciting ways. This position is available throughout the season but tours are heaviest in May and June.
Interpret Heritage’s collections to community and adult groups by leading interactive tours through our galleries and gardens. This position is available throughout the season but tours are heaviest May-July.
Exhibit & Research Volunteers:
Help our Exhibits and Collections staff with projects in progress. Volunteers may assist with collection maintenance, exhibit projects, and visitor evaluation depending on the phases of projects during the year. All interested volunteers must have attention to detail and patience. Note: opportunities are not always available depending on current projects and other volunteers currently working in the department.
Take time to smell the flowers! Work directly with the Director of Horticulture in the gardens doing various duties from weeding, mulching, fertilizing, pruning and propagation to plant documentation. As a Horticulture Volunteer you will help Heritage maintain our beautiful public gardens enjoyed by all who visit.
Experience the inner workings of a nonprofit organization in this extremely important job that can assist a variety of departments, from Development, Marketing, Membership, Education to Visitor Services and Finance. Duties include, but are not limited to, bulk mailings, filing, stuffing envelopes, telephone calls, updating web content, archiving promotional materials, membership outreach, etc.
Field Trips were always the best part of school! When you volunteer with Group Sales you are able to help groups from around the country visit Heritage. Help our Group Sales Manager prepare pre-visit materials, organizing and filing, way finding and facilitating groups visiting.
This position includes people who are able to assist in the maintenance of Heritage’s building and gardens. Must have willingness to work in all weather and stand for long periods of time. Assist Maintenance staff with various routine day-to-day maintenance projects and special one-time projects which may include: painting facilities, carpentry, parking lot attending, minor horticultural assisting, exhibit building, cleaning, etc. These volunteers ensure that the 100 acres of Heritage Museums, which is home to 65 acres of gardens and a collection of 13,000+ objects including 39 American automobiles are kept in a clean, safe and secure facility.
All volunteers should have: excellent customer service skills, the ability to stand for long periods of time and have a positive attitude! Please keep in mind that all positions require some work outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Training will be provided for all volunteer positions.
