Driven to Collect is located in the Automobile Gallery, which is a reproduction of the Round Stone Barn at Hancock Shaker Village. Learn more about the cars in Heritage’s antique automobile collection.
Driven to Collect showcases Heritage’s permanent collection of antique and classic automobiles with a whole new look, plus a carload of interactive fun! Discover how Heritage founder Josiah K. Lilly, III collected American automobiles in much the same way as collectors assemble their collections. All have great passion for the objects they collect and some have a desire to share their collections with others. What Americans collect says a lot about our culture. What people of other cultures collect similarly defines their shared experiences.
Driven to Collect features the fine cars in the Heritage collection, including a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster owned by Gary Cooper, a 1935 Ford Phaeton, a rare 1927 LaSalle, and a 1909 White Steam Car Model M owned by President Taft. In addition, the Collector’s Corner features autos on loan from private collectors. This year, auto collector David Geisinger will display his 1966 Volvo P1800, 1983 Land Rover Series III Stage One, and a 1955 Porsche Spyder.

Behind the Scenes Auto Tours return in 2015
Each month from May to October, you’ll have the opportunity to go behind the scenes with curator Jennifer Madden for a tour of our antique auto collection storage. Jennifer will share little-known facts and stories about the twenty cars in this area, while participants have the opportunity to closely examine the vehicles. Participants will also learn how the collection was formed, the original purchase price of each vehicle, the work that goes into maintaining this world-class collection, and the ins and outs of moving the cars and preparing them for exhibit. Advance registration is recommended as space is limited.
