From their roots in Europe in the 1880s to today, motorcycles have symbolized independence and personal freedom. The idea of linking an engine to the newly popular bicycle seems to have occurred to numerous inventors simultaneously. In a similar manner to the development of the automobile, many motorcycle manufacturing companies soon sprang up and races incentivized the development of tough, fast and reliable bikes. “Born to Ride” features numerous examples of American motorcycles from the fondly remembered Indian and Crocker machines to classics made by Harley-Davidson, one of the few American motorcycle companies still operating today.
