Inspiration & Process

Balloons, drink bottles, straws, cigarette butts and plastic cups are some of the most commonly found trash on Cape Cod beaches. Cindy Pease Roe gathers all kinds of beach trash, weaving or welding it together into something new. Look closer—this piece is entirely made of discarded party debris collected from the beach.

Night swimming in the waters around Cape Cod as a child, Roe encountered phosphorescent jellyfish, perhaps the starting point for a lifelong partnership with water ecosystems, the source material and catalyst for her art. As an educator and activist as well as an artist, she makes art to prompt conversations about the beauty and devastation of our ecosystems.
