About the Pieces

Sue Beardsley
East Falmouth, Massachusetts
2019-2022, steel
After Sue Beardsley retired from her office job, she began to walk every day in the woods. On those walks, she found many pieces of discarded metal thrown haphazardly among the leaves. Thinking about those interesting shapes rusting away and wanting to clean up the woods, Sue began her journey into recycled metal art.
Inspiration & Process
Sue took her first class in “Art Welding” soon after and began collecting pieces of trashed metal from anywhere she could find–the landfill, the woods, dumpsters. As people became aware of other uses for their metal refuse, they would bring it all to her. Her pile grew! These sculptures are created from those pieces of metal refuse. For Beardsley, the fun is in redefining the once-functional value of leftover parts, making a unified whole and shifting the focus toward something new.
“I have come to think that even though we became a society with a “Trash-It, Don’t Reuse It” philosophy, that appears to be changing. Many of us are now aware of the dire straits of the environment. I see this clearly as others are so eager to find new uses for old items. I am glad to be part of this movement to save the planet. I hope we’re not too late.”
