First Wellness Garden in Our Region
July 20, 2018
July 20, 2018 (Sandwich, MA) – The “Garden of the Senses,” the first wellness garden to be established in the region, begins construction next week at Heritage Museum & Gardens, sowing the seeds for a new nature experience firmly rooted in historic Sandwich, Massachusetts.
Situated behind Heritage’s Old East Windmill, the new garden was designed by the internationally recognized award winning firm Dirtworks Landscape Architecture PC. Once completed, the garden will provide universal access and programs for those with a range of physical and mental disabilities.
The garden location was chosen to provide expansive new vistas that have rarely been seen by visitors before. Visitors will wind their way through scenic landscapes on walkways designed to bypass challenging hilly terrain, providing more easy access to the dramatic Flume Fountain.
The “Garden of the Senses” expresses Heritage Museums & Gardens’ goal to provide experiences that are welcoming to all. Stretching across two acres of property, the garden will offer a rich, relaxing experience designed to appeal to the senses of every visitor, regardless of age or ability. Through careful detailing and programming, the garden also offers a range of therapeutic attributes, including range of motion and cognitive skills. Sensitive to the discrete needs of each visitor, the garden will provide important health and wellness benefits to all visitors.
During its initial construction phase, the Hart Family Maze Garden will be temporarily closed to visitors. However, the Windmill Garden is expected to remain open until the beginning of September.
So as Heritage turns the soil, tills the fields, lays out the beds, and establishes the plants, anticipation continues to grow for the debut of the new “Garden of the Senses” during Heritage Museums & Gardens 50th Anniversary in the summer of 2019.
