Every Year Something New

This magical round garden near the flagpole, behind the Special Exhibition Gallery, was a gift by the McInnes Family in 2010 in memory of Blanche and Milton McInnes, Don McInnes’ parents. Originally a long, narrow, arch shaped bed about 20’ behind where it currently is, it was re-located and redesigned by Horticulture Director Les Lutz in 2014 to become a focal point at the end of the brick walk that crosses the Parade Field, and featuring mostly poisonous plants from Amy Stewart’s book, as part of the exciting Wicked Plants exhibit we hosted that year. He chose boxwood edged circular garden beds to evoke entering an old, decrepit, formal garden that had fallen into disrepair.

Since 2016, Senior Gardener Iris Clearwater has given it a new theme every year, in hopes of creating a place for people to feel like they are stepping into another world with a sense of wonder, surprise, and discovery using interesting and exotic plants, often grown in our greenhouse. In 2017 it was the Red Garden, 2018 Black and Green, and in 2019 the Rainbow Garden. In 2020 the theme was Pollinators, featuring host plants for many native butterflies of Cape Cod, as well as plantings for native bees, and the opportunity to participate in citizen science by becoming a Beecologist during your visit and at home!
