Heritage Museums & Gardens Awarded $60,000 TernSOLAR Matching Grant for Renewable Energy Initiative

December 11, 2024 – Heritage Museums & Gardens is proud to announce it has been awarded a $60,000 TernSOLAR Challenge Grant from the Tern Foundation. This funding will support the installation of a 58.4 kW rooftop solar system as part of the new net zero Barbey Family Welcome Center, advancing Heritage’s commitment to environmental sustainability and renewable energy education.

The TernSOLAR Challenge Grant Program is dedicated to expanding renewable energy in Massachusetts communities by making solar technology more accessible to nonprofit organizations. The program empowers nonprofits to generate clean energy, reduce utility costs, and engage with their communities around environmental issues. The matching grant structure also provides a platform to inspire additional fundraising while promoting public awareness of renewable energy solutions.

A Step Toward a Sustainable Future
The solar installation at the Barbey Family Welcome Center will play a central role in Heritage’s sustainability initiatives. Designed to welcome 140,000 annual visitors, the new 9,000-square-foot, four-building complex replaces aging facilities originally built for 25,000 visitors per year. The center is a cornerstone of Heritage’s efforts to achieve a carbon-neutral future, incorporating:

A solar array
Heat pumps for efficient temperature control
Triple-paned windows
Bioswales to manage stormwater runoff
Bird-resistant glass
Permeable paving for water capture

Interpretive signage, QR codes, and video displays will educate visitors on the benefits of sustainable energy and carbon reduction strategies. These resources will be integrated into Heritage’s broader environmental education efforts, including public programs and web-based resources to inspire others to adopt carbon-neutral strategies in their own lives.

Supporting the Mission of Environmental Stewardship
This project underscores Heritage Museums & Gardens’ alignment with the Tern Foundation’s mission to support organizations prioritizing environmental sustainability and education. Since 2019, Heritage has already reduced its carbon emissions by 54%. The TernSOLAR grant further advances this mission by funding a key component of the new welcome center’s net-zero design.

“This generous support from the Tern Foundation is not only an investment in Heritage Museums & Gardens but also in the environment and our community,” said Anne Scott-Putney, President & CEO, Heritage Museums & Gardens. “The new solar arrays will use renewable power, reduce our energy costs and help us inspire visitors to think about how they can take steps toward a sustainable future. This is a wonderful opportunity for the broader community to lend their support, at all levels, for the new welcome center.”

A Call for Community Support
The TernSOLAR Challenge Grant requires Heritage to raise $60,000 in matching funds, doubling the impact of the grant. Donations from individuals, businesses, and other supporters will help ensure the successful completion of this transformative project.
